Application Tips

What is MDB?

Mobile Developers of Berkeley is a vibrant, tight-knit community of developers seeking to drive change within and outside of Berkeley. New members first go through a comprehensive mobile development training program and learn how to build a full-stack iOS or React Native app from scratch. After the training program, members join one of the three branches of our organization: DevCore, Contract, or Education. In addition to a supportive community within the club, we have a wide network of alumni as well, and there are many opportunities for professional development & recruiting!

Find out more about our club at https://mdb.dev/about/ or come out to our recruitment events!

What does MDB look for in candidates?

The ideal applicant has a drive to learn, dedication to work on projects, great teamwork ability, technical capability (but not necessarily an expert!), and excellent communication skills and innovative ideas.

Our application process is a holistic process where we evaluate candidates based on their application responses, interview and interactions with members. Throughout the process, we want to better understand you through your unique stories, interests, background, personalities and values. We strive to have a diverse class filled with people who are authentically themselves, will work and grow together to benefit each other and MDB.

Do I need to know how to code before joining?

There are no required skills except that we expect students to either have CS knowledge from high school projects, AP Computer Science, or be concurrently enrolled in CS 61A! You don’t even need to be a CS major to join the club.

What is the time commitment?

Time commitment can vary depending on your role in the club! The training program is often comparable to a lighter 4-unit class (10-12 hours per week).

Does it matter which platform I choose?

No! This semester you will be choosing your platform once you are accepted into the club. We will be offering iOS and React Native this semester!

Why do we have an application process?

In an ideal world, we would like to accept all our candidates and allow everyone to join our MDB family. Unfortunately, due to training program resources, room capacities, and maintaining a tight-knit community within the club, we have to limit the size of the incoming class. That said, we do make our lessons & resources available to anybody within the Berkeley community on our website at https://mdb.dev/resources/.
